DEMENTIA DENIED: One Woman's True Story of Surviving a Terminal Diagnosis & Reclaiming Her Life
A Medical Mystery Miracle Memoir That Will Leave You Speechless… and Then Give You Hope.
Dementia Denied isn’t just a memoir—it’s a rare glimpse inside the unraveling mind of someone diagnosed with advanced dementia… from the person who lived to tell about it.
When Ginger Smith was placed in hospice with a presumed diagnosis of Lewy body dementia and given weeks to live, her family began preparing for the inevitable. Her cognition had vanished. Her body had withered. She was hallucinating, bedbound, and unable to feed or speak for herself. There was no coming back.
And yet—she did.
With raw vulnerability, biting wit, and jaw-dropping honesty, Ginger recounts the strange, miraculous, and medically confounding path that brought her back from the brink. Told from her unique vantage point as both patient and survivor, this story defies conventional logic and challenges everything we think we know about neurodegeneration.
In this book, you’ll find:
Ginger's story doesn’t offer easy answers, but it does ask the hard questions: What if dementia isn’t always what it seems? What if the brain can heal in ways we’ve yet to understand? And what if a second chance doesn’t come from a cure, but from courage?
This book is for caregivers searching for answers. It’s for families fighting for a loved one’s dignity. And it’s for anyone who believes in the power of a story to change how we understand illness, healing, and hope itself.

First Hand: A Family’s Legacy Through America’s Defining Moments is a powerful and uniquely American narrative told through the eyes of three generations—each bearing witness to, and participating in, some of the most pivotal moments in our nation's history. Spanning over two centuries, this trilogy of authentic, first-person accounts connects the founding of America, its defense against tyranny, and a rare insider’s perspective on its near-political unraveling.
The story begins with Lt. William McDowell, an officer in the Continental Army who served under General Anthony Wayne during the Revolutionary War. His meticulously kept daily diary from 1781 to 1782 provides a rare, unfiltered view into the hardships, hopes, and heroism of a soldier fighting for independence and the birth of the U.S. Constitution. Painstakingly preserved and transcribed by DAR historian Alice Brants, his words now live on as a legacy for future generations.
Nearly 160 years later, McDowell’s descendant, Lt. James Maxwell Unland, fought to protect the very freedoms his ancestor helped to establish. Serving in General Patton’s Third Army during World War II, he fought across Normandy, liberated Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, and helped free Holland from Nazi occupation. His memoir, written decades later at the request of his son, offers deeply personal recollections of a soldier’s life in combat—and the quiet struggles that remained long after the war.
The final section brings us to the 1970s and the heart of American political upheaval. John Unland, son of Lt. James Unland and eight generations removed from Lt. McDowell, served in the Nixon White House during the Watergate scandal. His personal diary captures the unraveling of an administration and the shock of witnessing firsthand the near-subversion of the very Constitution his forebears fought to create and defend.
Discovered decades later in boxes long stored away and nearly forgotten, these writings were brought together with great care and purpose. First Hand is not just a commemoration of family history—it is a deeply human reflection on patriotism, sacrifice, civic duty, and the enduring power of the Constitution through three generations of service.
Each account—rich with original documents, historical context, personal anecdotes, and photographs—forms a rare and compelling family archive, woven together by a singular thread: the fight to create, defend, and uphold the United States of America.

Warm, Dry, and Comfortable: The Story of Developing the GORE-TEX® Brand is more than a business memoir—it's a front-row seat to the birth of one of the most iconic performance brands in the world. Told with honesty, insight, and humor by John Unland, a key player in the development and marketing of GORE-TEX® fabric during the pivotal 1980s, this book chronicles how a revolutionary product moved from lab discovery to global recognition—not through a single “tipping point,” but through years of grit, creativity, persistence, and bold marketing strategy.
Unland takes readers behind the scenes at W. L. Gore & Associates, revealing how GORE-TEX became synonymous with all-weather protection. Through countless meetings, phone calls, ad campaigns, research studies, and trade shows, he and his team positioned the brand to become a household name across outdoor gear, apparel, and beyond. Along the way, readers meet unforgettable characters—from rock legends and jazz greats to pioneering explorers—and experience quirky, real-life moments, including a dog in the Rose Garden and a melted candy pitch gone wrong.
But this is also a deeply personal journey. After suffering a life-altering stroke, Unland refused to let physical setbacks stop him from telling this story. Over three years, with the help of friends, voice dictation, and Post-It® notes galore, he poured his experience and heart into these pages—not just to honor the GORE-TEX legacy, but to prove that resilience can push any project to the finish line.
Part business case study, part inspiring memoir, and wholly human, Warm, Dry, and Comfortable offers an inside look at how world-class brands are really built—and how even the most groundbreaking achievements begin with the courage to say yes when the opportunity comes knocking.

"ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: There is but one person who I must acknowledge in putting this book together in all facets: organizing, editing, helping in the design and, as you will see, paying attention to every detail of these eras of our nation’s history. That person is Shanlynn, who has been my friend and outstanding assistant for nearly 14 years. She is spectacular! "

...My gratitude also extends to the Gore family, especially Bob, who trusted me, as well as Jack and me as a team, yet was always watching us over his shoulder to make sure we didn’t go off the rails. Very wise indeed. Bob was very involved in this book. Bob and his wonderful wife, Jane, listened to the entire audio recording of it; we all sat together and picked out photos for it; and we have talked and emailed frequently throughout the writing process—which took more than three years to complete.
Then along came Shanlynn, who, along with Linda, helped me salvage my business after my stroke in 2007. She came to our house on a daily basis and essentially kept us afloat. During that time, not only did Shanlynn show incredible professionalism, but she also became our friend. Her assistance with the final organization and editing of this book—spending countless hours on the phone to get the details right—was beyond invaluable."
After finishing the publication of her first volume of poems, "The Poet Speaks" in 2023, Dr. Elizabeth Gioia entrusted me with the manuscript for her second poetry collection, "Death by Epiphany: Electrified Thought," which, at the time, was little more than a Word document filled with raw brilliance. From the first read, I knew there was something extraordinary nestled between those lines. What followed was a heartfelt and meticulous journey of transformation. Working side-by-side with Dr. Gioia, we polished each poem, preserved the rhythm of her voice, and brought clarity to her most electric expressions.
My goal was to honor her vision while enhancing the flow and resonance of each piece, ensuring it spoke directly to the reader's heart and mind. We collaborated on everything from formatting and structure to the final cover design, shaping a book that stands as both a literary triumph and a deeply personal testament to growth, pain, joy, and discovery.
The poems span two decades of Dr. Gioia's life, tracing her evolution as a poet and thinker from age 40 to 63. The result is a page-turning journey of sudden insight and soul-awakening reflection, where each poem feels like a bolt of divine realization—or what Dr. Gioia affectionately calls a "God-bomb."
It was my great honor to help bring this book to life, and I truly believe readers will be moved by the power, playfulness, and poignancy captured in its pages. "Death by Epiphany" isn't just a book of poems—it's a symphony of thought, a celebration of learning, and a shining example of what happens when fearless creativity meets careful craftsmanship.

Embarking on this journey with Dr. Gioia's book, I dedicated myself to a thorough final proofreading and adjusting the formatting. Together, we meticulously combed through each page, ensuring her approval of every suggested change while aligning them closely with her vision. Following this, I embarked on a transformational task—revamping the formatting for the paperback edition to elevate its appeal. The journey didn't stop there; I then crafted an eBook version, tailored with precise formatting to suit the digital realm.
It's important to note the initial state of the paperback. Originally entrusted to 'Word 2 Kindle,' the book was returned to Dr. Gioia riddled with typographical errors and plagued by bizarre formatting. It seemed almost deliberately complicated, as well as a disservice to her investment. Recognizing the gravity of this situation, I dove into a labor of love. I painstakingly corrected these oversights, investing countless hours at no additional cost. My commitment was to perfection, ensuring that the transition from paperback to eBook was seamless and error-free. This dedication exemplifies my approach: transforming challenges into triumphs and ensuring every author's work shines in its best light.
